This pretty Valentine’s Day wood heart starts out plain, but clay embellishments add so much character that someone would never guess it started as a Dollar Tree wood cut out! I’ve got the complete supply list and full tutorial ready for this wood heart with clay embellishments, just in time for Valentine’s Day!

- Dollar Tree Wood Hearts
- Waverly Ivory Paint
- Modelite Air Dry Clay
- Corn Starch
- Silicone Molds

First step, paint the wood hearts with the Waverly Ivory chalk paint. While the hearts are drying begin working on the air dry clay embellishments.

Next, be sure to add a liberal amount of corn starch to the molds. Any excess can be lightly brushed off later but if you don’t use enough the clay will not easily release.

Adding the Elements…
I like to use a craft blade to remove excess clay or cut openings like the one on the above heart locket. Once the embellishments are cleaned up they need to be set aside to dry overnight. For the “spindles” I allowed them to dry overnight and then trimmed the edges with a small pair of scissors.

Once all the clay pieces are dry they can be trimmed up and cut to fit the hearts. I’m using hot glue to attach the clay to the face of the hearts but any glue will work to attach.

Once the clay is attached to the heart I want to lightly brush on some dark wax to really bring out the texture and detail of all the elements.

Lastly, I’ll add some rusty wire by inserting one end into the heart and coiling it and hot gluing the other end to the back of the heart, forming a loop.

The clay additions really give these hearts so much wow factor! Don’t you think? I would love to know if you enjoyed this DIY! Let me know!!
