Do you love the mini cutting boards from Hobby Lobby as much as me?? I’m always excited when I find new ways to use them throughout the year and today I have a brand new tutorial for the Fourth! I can’t wait to show you how to create this DIY patriotic cutting board for your home!

- Hobby Lobby Mini Cutting Board
- Red/White/Blue Paint
- Dollar Tree Stencil or Other Stencil
- Painter’s Tape
- Material Strips
- Antiquing Wax
- Mini Star or Button(Optional)
- Small Dollar Tree Pouncer to use with Stencil
- File or Sanding Block
- Small Rectangle of Kraft Paper
- Small Stamps
- String

First things first, paint the face of the cutting board white. This required two coats for me to get good coverage.

Now, add a piece of painter’s tape and paint the top of the board blue, including the handle. I used two coats of the blue paint. Allow the blue paint to dry before moving on to the next step.

Next, add tape to the bottom of the board to create red stripes. I also used a piece across the top to protect the blue paint. I just eyeballed it and got the tape as straight as possible. It’s always a good idea to use a small piece of tape between the longer tape strips to ensure equal distance between your stripes and then remove before painting.

Add red paint to the areas I’m showing above to create three red stripes, using two coats for good coverage and allowing dry time between each coat.

Now that our paint is all dry and touched up it’s time to add some stars. I found this inexpensive stencil at Dollar Tree and even though the shapes are intended to be starfish, they work perfectly for stars on this project.
Adding Details

I’m using a small Dollar Tree pouncer to add white paint to the stencils. This inexpensive stencil worked well for this project.

When all the stars are added allow them to dry completely and use a file or sanding block to distress the edges before adding the wax.

I’m using the wax to cover the entire piece, but you can use as little or as much as you’d like on your project. I think it makes a HUGE difference in the look and I love it!!

Now the only thing left to do is add some finishing touches, including a bow and tag!

Gather your favorite material strips and secure with either another material strip or jute. I also brushed on some wax to darken the colors a bit. A star or button can be added to the center of the bow. I’m making a simple little tag from kraft paper and stamping USA onto it and I’ll tie this onto the bow with some string.

Finally finished with this little DIY Patriotic Cutting Board and I’m crazy about the finished look! I may leave this piece out all year! What do you think about this one? Let me know if you make one for yourself!
