I spotted this cross at Dollar Tree recently and immediately wondered how I could make it over to match my style. I really loved the edges and the distressed look that it already had, so I decided to grab it for my stash and a future make-over! Recently I pulled it out and had an idea to combine it with one of my favorite hymns and can’t wait for you to see how this DIY Easter cross turns out!

First of all I want to remove the greenery and sand the words off the face of the cross. There will be some excess glue left behind but it will be covered.

Next, I need something to cover the surface and I have an idea of using a hymn, “The Old Rugged Cross.” I’ll make a copy of the hymn and then distress that copy to use. If you don’t have access to a hymnal for copying, you can find copies here on Amazon.

Now I’ll crumple the copy, smooth it out, and then submerge it into coffee. Lay it out on a piece of wax paper to dry. Once dry I’ll lay the paper on top of the cross and use a water pen to outline the cross to allow easier tearing.

Now I’ll attach the paper to the cross using Mod Podge, brushing the edges down as well.

All the details…
Finally, I’ll add extra details to this DIY Easter cross using a piece of material, some greenery, and a Hobby Lobby clearance flower. I’ll attach everything with hot glue.
