Simple Spring Dollar Tree Sign Make-Over

So, you know I love me some Dollar Tree, but sometimes a DT piece needs a little make-over!! I was perusing the NEW spring/Easter decor and found a little cutting board sign I really liked, all except the background color that is. It might need a couple more details added too!! Come see this simple spring Dollar Tree sign make-over for yourself!!

How cute are these carrots?!? I really like the print on the front, but you can see the tacks in the corners are a little wonky and the yellow background needs to be changed too. I really liked this gray scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby, so I’m thinking it will make a nice background replacement!

A few minor changes….

I want to replace the background so I’ll need to remove the front piece with the carrots. It is glued, so I’ll use the heat gun to heat up the back of the sign and it pops free fairly easily. The paper does tear, but no worries because it will be covered with the NEW paper!! The four tacks don’t go all the way through, but just be careful not to lose them. I’ll flip the sign over and trace it on the back of the gray scrapbook paper in order to cut the new replacement piece.

Now we are ready to add a layer of Mod Podge to the surface of the sign. Allow it to dry, then lay the new scrapbook paper cutout on the surface. Cover with a sheet of parchment paper and iron it on. This will create a smooth, wrinkle free surface.

My paper was not quite wide enough, so I’ll cut a small section, making sure to match the lines up. Press around the handle to create a crease that can be seen in order to cut.

Follow the same steps with the Mod Podge when adding this piece.

Adding the details…

Now we can add the carrot print back onto the surface, but let’s reposition those tacks first. I’ll just pull the tacks out and stick them back in the corners. If the tacks are bent you can easily clip the point off and reattach with hot glue.

Once the tacks are removed I can see the holes, and since I’m not placing the tacks back in the same spots, I want to cover those. I’ll use a drop of white paint on each hole to cover it.

Finally the tacks are replaced and I’ll add some distress ink to the edges. I can now move on to some simple embellishments for the handle. I’ll use some small beads, wire, and the cutest tiny Dollar Tree carrots!!

I’m using 32 9mm beads (I order mine from Amazon.) and stringing them on 26 gauge floral wire. If you don’t have wire, the beads can be strung on string instead. On the ends I’ll be adding the adorable Dollar Tree carrots by drilling a small hole and inserting them on the wire. Secure the ends by coiling around a pencil. A drop of hot glue can be added for extra security.
