Crayola Air Dry clay and metal heart cookie cutter

First, let’s discuss everything needed for this faux cookie project. This is a complete list of what’s needed.

  • Crayola Air Dry Clay (I buy mine from Walmart.)
  • Your favorite cookie cutter. I prefer to use metal cutters.
  • Cornstarch
  • Wax Paper
  • Red Devil Lightweight Spackling
  • Pink Acrylic Paint
  • Mod Podge Spray Sealant
  • Plastic Knife
  • Small bowl with lid that seals
  • Faux Sprinkles (Optional)

Once all the supplies are gathered we’re ready to get started by laying a piece of the wax paper onto your work surface and rolling a large portion of the air dry clay into a ball. Roll it between your hand until it is smooth, then use a rolling pin to flatten it to approximately 1/4″ thickness. Press the cookie cutter into some of the cornstarch and cut a heart shape into the clay, repeating this process until you have the desired number of clay cookies.

Next, you’ll need to allow the clay cookies to dry, preferably overnight. I leave mine on the wax paper and flip them over every few hours so they dry on both sides. If the edges do not lay flat, cover them with another piece of wax paper and add books or a flat pan on top to hold them down as they dry.

Once dry the clay may take on a grayish hue, so I like to paint my cookies with Crafter’s Collection acrylic paint in Milky White. Paint the front, sides, and back of the cookies and allow to dry completely.

Red Devil lightweight spackling

Now we’re ready to add some of the spackling to a bowl ( I use a plastic bowl with lid that seals.) along with your favorite color of paint. I want these to look like traditional Valentine’s Day cookies so I’ll be using pink.

Next, spread the faux icing onto each cookie using a plastic knife of other utensil. I like to spread the icing unevenly and swirl it to give it a more realistic look. Set the iced cookies aside and allow them to dry overnight. Faux sprinkles can be added while the icing is still wet if you’d like. I found these that I’m using at Dollar Tree.
