Buttons are a staple in my craft stash and since I need to purge some of them I was looking for a way to use them at Christmas so I landed on the idea of this easy DIY button candy cane. It’s perfect for my Christmas kitchen and I want to share with you how easy it comes together!

First I’ll gather my supplies, beginning with red and white buttons and a mini charcuterie board from Hobby Lobby. I’ll also be using the supplies listed below.
- White Paint
- Craft Glue
- Small Candle (Rub the wax on the board before painting.)
- Distress Ink
- Scraper
- Greenery Sprigs
- Red & White Bakers Twine
- Kraft Paper Tag (Tag Tutorial)
- Small Stamps
- Red/Black Ink
- String

First I’ll add some of the antiquing wax to the board, covering the front, sides, and back. I’ll let the board dry completely before moving on.

Next I’ll add wax to the board where I don’t want the white paint to adhere. Once the wax is added I’ll begin covering the whole board with the white paint.

When the paint is dry I’ll use a plastic scraper to scrape away the paint and wax.

Adding the Buttons…

Next I’ll start adding the buttons creating the candy cane shape. I like to addd the bottom layer, glue it down, and then glue the next layer on top.

Once the easy DIY button candy cane is assembled it needs some embellishments added. I’ll add the greenery sprigs and bakers twine bow first.

Then I’ll attach the kraft paper tag with CANDY CANES stamped on it.

Finishing up, I’ll add some distress ink to the corners. This project is small but perfect to tuck on a shelf or in a tiered tray on a hot cocoa bar. I love repurposing old buttons so this project is perfect! Let me know if you enjoy crafting with buttons and if you might give this idea a try!
