Dollar Tree Faux Rusty Metal Shamrock

I recently spotted St. Patrick’s Day decor at Dollar Tree, including a shiny metal shamrock! I always prefer the distressed style so I think a faux rust effect will work well on the brand new, shiny metal. Rusted projects are some of my favorite, and I can’t wait to see how this Dollar Tree faux rusty metal shamrock turns out!!

I’ll begin this project by painting the shamrock green. This can be done using acrylic paint like I’m showing you here, but it turned out a coat of spray paint worked best.

Once the shamrock is painted with the darker green spray paint, I’ll go back and add some of the lighter Waverly chalk paint in Moss.

Now we’ll add some faux rust using a mixture of coffee and sugar, with a sprinkling of cinnamon. I’ll brush on some Mod Podge, then sprinkle on a little of the coffee and sugar mixture. I use a paint brush to apply this mixture. While the Mod Podge is still wet, I sprinkle on some cinnamon.

For the “rusting” mixture I’m adding a few tablespoons of coffee, a tablespoon of sugar, and a little cinnamon. I’m also sprinkling extra cinnamon on top.

It really is starting to look rusty! I just love this faux technique! Once I get the look I like I’ll let this dry down and then spray on a matte top coat.

Adding Embellishments

I’ll be hanging this with some rusty wire that I have in my stash, and I also wanted to add a bow to the top. I’m using some strips of material tied in the center with a little metal key picked up in a pack from Hobby Lobby. I’ll hot glue it to the top and even add a couple of sprigs of greenery.

Oh my goodness, I just love everything about how this turned out y’all!! That rusty finish, the pop of green, the subtleness of the key, and the cream bow work so well together!! I’d love to know what you think of the faux rust effect on this one. Y’all let me know!
